What to check when you receive a new phone

A simple checklist: the box, the IMEI, the screen, the camera, charging, and your invoice and warranty.
A few minutes of checking when you receive a phone can save you a lot of trouble later. Go through this list calmly, ideally before the delivery person or the shop staff leaves.
The box and the seal: look at the box for damage and ask whether the device is new and sealed. Open it and make sure the phone, the cable and the other items listed on the box are all there.
The IMEI: every phone has an IMEI number. On most phones you can see it by dialing *#06#. Compare it with the number printed on the box and on your invoice; they should match.
The screen: switch the phone on and look for scratches, dead pixels, lines or uneven colour. Touch all areas of the screen to be sure it responds everywhere.
The camera, speaker and microphone: take a photo with the front and back cameras, record a short video with sound, and make a test call to check the speaker and the microphone.
Charging and buttons: plug in the charger and check that the phone charges. Press every button, and test the fingerprint sensor if the phone has one.
Software: connect to Wi-Fi, check that the phone starts normally and look for system updates.
Your documents: keep the invoice and the warranty card in a safe place. You will need them if you ever need warranty service.
